24 Aug Character Dining at Walt Disney World – the Modified Way
Character Dining has been a staple of a Walt Disney World vacation for a long time. Meeting Mickey and the gang as you start your day with a hearty breakfast or while enjoying a lunch in the middle of a park day is a magical experience that adds so much to your vacation. With current restrictions and guidelines in place to promote social distancing character dining has been modified so that you still have an opportunity to enjoy it safely. At this time there are 3 locations in which you can view characters during your meal. We recently had the pleasure of experiencing one of these meals while on a weekend visit this Summer.
We enjoyed breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace – a restaurant at the top of Disney’s Riviera Resort. Our experience began as we walked into the lobby on the ground floor of the resort and were immediately greeted by cast members, directed towards our restaurant and advised to check-in via our My Disney Experience app. Check-in is available on your app 15 minutes prior to your reservation time.
Once we exited the elevator, we were again greeted by a cast member who performed temperature screenings on each of us prior to our entry. Once we were all checked we waited very briefly in a seating area until our app notified us that our table was ready.
Walking into Topolino’s we immediately noticed the social distancing measures in place within the restaurant as several tables were empty between parties. In the back of the room, there is a panoramic view of the Disney Skyliner from the Caribbean Beach Resort to the Riviera Resort that makes an amazing backdrop for both your photos and your meal! As we made our way to our table, we saw Minnie Mouse dancing about and waving in the distance and our waitress told us that we could remove our masks while seated at our table.
I am a HUGE fan of a good breakfast before a long park day, and this one did not disappoint. We each chose our own meal from the menu along with coffee and Disney’s famous POG juice (a blend of passion fruit, orange, and guava). To our delight, we were also served a variety of pastries along with dipping sauces! The pastries are available for a refill if you run out or just want to enjoy more of Minnie’s chocolate chip muffins.
While enjoying our meal we saw Minnie, Mickey, Donald, and Daisy all dressed in different “artist” attire. My 4-year-old daughter was in awe of Daisy the ballerina and laughed herself silly at Donald the sculptor. Each of the four was announced to the room before they spent time walking from one corner to the next, pausing and interacting from a distance with each table. The characters will not approach your table, however, they do individually wave, blow kisses, and pose for pictures for you. We were able to see each character multiple times throughout our meal.
My daughter was beyond excited to see Mickey and the gang back in action even if she couldn’t run up and hug them. As parents, we were also very excited to have an opportunity to enjoy our meal while still grabbing socially distanced photo ops. Overall our experience was well worth the time and money spent dining at Topolino’s Terrace for breakfast and all three of us agreed it was the highlight of our trip. At the end of our meal, we were even presented with a beautiful card with a drawing of the characters on one side and signatures of each one on the back! A special token to help remember a classic experience made even more special in a time where a little magic goes an extra-long way.
