Understanding the Credit Card Hold Policy for Disney Resort Guests

Over the past year Disney has implemented a new card payment policy for guests who opt to put a card on file for charging privileges during a Walt Disney World Resort hotel stay.  Under the new policy, Disney Resort hotels will place incremental authorization holds on the payment card for estimated incidental expenses, in addition to any balance due on the reservation. Because we strive to keep you in the know and don’t want you to be worried with any surprises upon your arrival, we’ve included a quick recap of the policy change for you to browse ahead of your upcoming WDW stay!

 

**While linking a card to your account for charging is not required, do remember that you will NOT be able to charge to your Magic Band in the parks or at the resort if you opt out.

 

Check IN:Upon arrival at your WDW resort, the hotel will place an authorization hold on your card for any remaining balance + $100! This $100 is meant to cover estimated incidentals. If your spending exceeds the $100 hold, additional incremental holds will automatically be obtained. The authorization holds on the card will not exceed the current balance due plus $100.

Disney notes that this new policy “better aligns with hotel industry practices” and helps ensure that a sometimes large, single charge at check out is not flagged for fraudulent activity by your card company and/or is not rejected for exceeding your daily card limit.

Check OUT: Payment is processed for the balance due on the account after checkout. For reservations longer than 5 days, the card on file will be charged the current balance on the Resort folio(s) every fifth day of your stay and after checkout. In general, charges will be settled and posted to the card within 1 to 2 days after checkout day.

**Keep in mind, this new policy is  HOLD not a CHARGE ….meaning, you will only be charged for what you’ve actually spent and any authorization holds in excess of the balance due will be released after checkout day.

What if you planned to apply cash payments or Disney gift cards to your room account throughout your stay ? 

 As is current practice, guests will still be able to visit the front desk to apply cash or Disney gift card payments against their balance due to avoid actual charges being placed on their credit card.

  • Insider tip:It’s always a good idea to let the front desk know upon arrival if you plan to pay towards your balance throughout the week vs utilizing the credit card hold to cover those costs. The front desk team will instruct you on the best way and timing to do this!
